Food Insecurity In the Elder Population

As we all prepare to gather around our tables with loved ones this holiday season, we would like to share with you a growing and concerning need in Valparaiso. The topic of food insecurity and in our case, the specific concerns for the elders of our community age 60-99.

Since 2000, Pines Village Retirement Communities, Inc. has been the food provider for the senior nutrition site at the Banta Senior Center, receiving state/federal funds for Congregate Nutrition Services through our Area Agency on Aging Northwest Indiana Community Action (NWICA).  We have seen a steady and significant growth within this program. From July 1, 2014-June 30, 2015, 6032 meals were served. With the completion of the fiscal year in June 2018, 8010 meals were served. That is a 33% increase!

In addition to a nutritionally balanced hot meal, the nutrition site provides social interaction and nutrition education. Currently, 58% of those served live alone and 48% live on less than $16,756.00. 75% of all individuals that eat at the nutrition site are either low income or socially isolated.

The need this fiscal year has continued to increase. More people are accessing a meal more frequently. If this pattern continues, the grant funding will be depleted prior to the end of the cycle. Projections indicate there will be a shortfall of $18,000.

We have three options:

  1. Request more grant funds. In past years due to the underutilization of another site, additional funds have been granted. However, there are no guarantees these funds will be available.
  2. Turn people away or shut down the site when funding has been depleted.
This is not an option and we hope you agree.
  3. Raise funds. The cost to support one meal is $7.03. The direct cost of the meal and the food preparation is $4.50. The remaining $2.53 helps with the management of the nutrition site and educational programming.

With your support, the nutrition site will be the difference in the lives of countless seniors in our community. Donations can be completed through the Donation Form below, select the Arts, Culture, Spirituality and Environment Fund in the drop-down box and proceeding with your donation.
